CK
(Conductive Keratoplasty)
Now Offered by Racine and Kenosha's Leader in Refractive Surgery, Dr. Ron Allen
CK or Conductive Keratoplasty is an FDA approved procedure which uses radio frequency waves to gently change the shape of your cornea. The radio waves shrink the corneal collagen to create a change in shape. This change in shape refocuses light rays so as to improve your near vision. Dr. Allen uses this procedure to treat presbyopia (loss of reading over age 40), but it can also be used to treat mild farsightedness as well. Many Racine and Kenosha residents can benefit from conductive keratoplasty.

What are the Advantages of CK?

- Most patients require treatment of only one eye.
- No cutting is involved.
- This procedure has a good safety profile with few serious complications
What Happens the Day of My Procedure?
You may not drive yourself. You must arrange transportation to and from Dr. Allen's Racine office. Upon arrival, you will be offered an optional sedative. Topical anesthetic drops will be applied to the operative eye. The non-operative eye will be taped closed. You will be reclined in a comfortable chair. Dr. Allen will instruct you to look at the center of a ring of light. Your eye will be marked with a pattern of dots that will be used to guide the treatment. The radio probe will gently contact each dot planned for your treatment. There will be no discomfort. The procedure will take approximately 3 - 5 minutes to complete.
After the procedure your eyes will feel scratchy. Immediately after surgery you should take a 4 - 5 hour nap. Your eye will feel much better after the nap. You will continue to have a mild foreign body sensation for 24 - 48 hours. Antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and comfort drops will be prescribed post-operatively. Most patients return to normal activities within 24 - 48 hours after surgery.
Will I have Side Effects?
Most patients will have mild daytime light sensitivity with mild glare, halos, and star bursting around headlights at night. These side effects usually resolve or are significantly reduced at one month after surgery.
Will I Ever Need Reading Glasses Again?
Yes? CK is used to provide functinal near vision (seeing your watch, cell phone, computer, or a menu). It is not meant to provide perfect near vision under all circumstances.
Is There an Adjustment Period?
Yes! CK is a variant of monovision. Usually your dominant eye will be used for distance, and your non-dominant eye for reading after CK. Your CK eye will be better for reading after the procedure but worse than it was before the procedure for distance. This will require several weeks to months to adjust to the eyes now having separate functions.
If you were unable to adjust, a laser vision correction procedure would be required to return the near eye to it's pre-operative distance vision condition. A contact lens trial prior to surgery is recommended to determine if you will be able to adjust easily.
Does Insurance Pay for CK?
No. However we offer a variety of payment options including zero down and zero percent financing. Most patients require only one eye be treated.
