How Do I Choose Cataract Doctor?
Ultimately you must meet your cataract doctor (surgeon) and feel comfortable with your choice. However several criteria are important.
Integrity:
Unless you are no longer seeing well enough to pass a drivers test, cataract surgery is usually not a necessity. If you feel that your doctor is pressuring you into surgery, get a second opinion.
Flexibility:
Your surgeon should work with you to determine the appropriate timing of surgery. Together you need to decide if topical or local anesthesia is the best option for you. Are your needs best met with a multifocal implant? You need to find a surgeon who will work with you -- not just dictate to you.
Access to Technology:
Eye care advances rapidly. Is your surgeon on the cutting edge? You have a right to know.
Local Surgeon:
Choose a surgeon within 45 minutes of your residence. You will need to make post-operative visits and transportation can be an issue.
