Laser Iridotomy
In angle closure glaucoma the iris (the colored part of the eye) covers the eyes drainage system. This can cause a rapid rise in pressure that can result in permanent vision loss. The treatment for this is called laser iridotomy. Laser light gently creates an opening in the iris allowing fluid to pass into the anterior eye chamber. This deepens the chamber and pulls the iris away from the drainage area thereby returning the pressure to normal.
Laser iridotomy is also performed as a preventative measure in eyes with the potential to develop angle closure glaucoma. PHAKIC IOL implantation for high myopia is one indication.
What Will I Experience with Laser Iridotomy?
Laser Iridotomy is an outpatient procedure. You will receive drops to constrict your pupil as well as drops to anesthetize your eye. A focusing lens will be placed on your eye. You will be aware of it but there will be no discomfort. The lens will keep your eyelids separated during the procedure. You will see several flashes of light and hear a clicking sound. You may notice a mild sensation during the treatment but discomfort is not involved. Your vision will be blurred briefly after the procedure. You will be required to take eye drops for several days. Mild redness and light sensitivity is normal for several days. Normal activities can be resumed in 24 hours.
