Limbal Relaxing Incisions
(LRI)
The limbus is the outer edge of the cornea. Making micro incisions in the cornea near the limbus is a safe and effective way to treat astigmatism. Corneal astigmatism is a condition where the cornea is steeper in one meridian than another creating two different points of focus. This results in blurred or double vision often at both distance and near.
Who is a Candidate for Limbal Relaxing Incisions?
- Patients with stable eyeglass prescriptions.
- Patients who have regular astigmatism.
- Patients who have no serious eye conditions.
- Patients who have small amounts of residual astigmatism after lasik, PRK, cataract surgery, prelex, or phakic intraocular lenses.
Where Does Dr. Allen Perform Limbal Relaxing Incisions?
All LRI procedures are performed in Dr. Allen's Racine office.
After the procedure your eyes will feel scratchy. Take a 4-5 hour nap. Your eye will feel much better after the nap. You will continue to have a mild foreign body sensation for 24-48 hours. Antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and comfort drops will be prescribed post operatively. Most patients return to normal activities within 24-48 hours after surgery.
What Will I Experience During the Procedure?
You must arrange transportation to and from our office. You will not be able to drive yourself. You will be given the option of taking an oral sedative prior to your procedure. Topical anesthetic drops are applied to the operative eye. You are escorted to the surgical suite and placed in a reclined position. The non-operative eye will be taped shut, and a smooth eyelid holder will be positioned on the operative eye. There will be no pain. Temporary markers will outline the treatment area on your cornea, and small arc incisions will be placed. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops will placed in the eye, and the eyelid holder will be removed. The time for the entire procedure will only be several minutes.
Your vision will be blurry and the eye will feel scratchy for several hours. Go straight home and sleep for 4-5 hours. Most patients can resume normal activities the next day. While vision usually improves in the first 48 hours, it will take weeks to stabilize.
Advantages of Limbal Relaxing Incisions:
