Multifocal Lens

ReZoom and ReSTOR Multifocal Intraocular Lens Implants now offered in Racine and Kenosha

The primary benefit of multifocal lens implants is to restore near vision, not just distance vision as in traditional implants. The natural lens may be removed because of a visually significant cataract or as a means to correct refractive error with a lens implant. When a traditional intraocular lens is placed, vision is corrected at distance or near - not both.

Many active patients desire less dependence on reading glasses and choose a multifocal lens. These lenses focus light for both near and distance objects. Dr. Allen believes both of the following multifocal implants are excellent choices, and are pleased to offer them to our Racine and Kenosha residents.

ReZoom

The Rezoom balanced view optics distributes light over five optic zones so that each lens has a distance dominant central zone for distance vision in bright light. It also provides near vision that allows 92% of Rezoom patients to never or occasionally wear glasses! Some patients will choose to wear glasses for fine print or night driving.

ReSTOR

Restor uses a unique process of apodization (blending of diffractive step heights) to distribute the appropriate light to distance and near for all points. Eighty-four percent of Restor patients obtain 20/25 uncorrected distance vision and near visual acuity of Jaeger 2. Eighty percent of Restor patients reported never wearing glasses.

Are there Side Effects with Multifocal Lens Implants?

Yes. Most patients notice halos or glare around headlights at night initially. As they adjust to their new vision system these will usually diminish greatly. If you are farsighted you may already have halos around lights at night.

Will I Require Additional Surgery to Optimize My Vision?

Possibly. If after your surgery you still have residual nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, you may require an enhancement procedure. This could require laser vision correction or limbal relaxing incisions.

Are Multifocals Covered by My Insurance?

If you have cataracts, your cataract surgery will be covered by your medical insurance. However, the cost of this premium lens and the additional tests and pre-operative evaluation are not covered by your insurance. Zero % down and Zero % interest financing is available at Allen Eye Care.

Should some patients avoid a multifocal implant?

Yes. Patients requiring detailed night vision should have a traditional implant. These would include pilots, truck drivers, police and fireman. Nearsighted patients must also be cautious, as they are more likely to have trouble adjusting to halos and glare.

Will My Vision be Perfect?

No. Multifocal lenses allow reduced dependency on glasses. However, they will not guarantee perfect vision at all times and all circumstances. You my still require glasses to optimize your vision.
