PHAKIC IOL's
Now offered in Racine and Kenosha Wisconsin
The word PHAKIC simply means that your natural lens is not removed. There are two primary styles of this type of intraocular lens, discussed below. PHAKIC IOL's or lenses allow your natural lens to continue to focus and therefore you are able to read if you are under age 40.
Verisyes
The Verisyes IOL is inserted through a small microsurgical incision and placed in front of the pupil. It is attached to superficial iris (the colored part of the eye). Sutures are not used to attach the lens to the iris although they are used to close the microsurgical incision.
Who is a Verisyses Candidate?
1. Patients too nearsighted for LASIK.
2. Patients with a stable eye glass prescription.
3. Patients with no serious eye conditions.
Are there Special Tests Required to Determine if I am a Candidate?
Yes. A complete eye exam and Verisyes consulation will be required. However two special tests are important.
1. Corneal endothelial count: the cells on the inside of your cornea pumps fluid from the cornea to the inside of the eye. This keeps the cornea from swelling. Corneas lose these cells as we age. If your cells are too low, a PHAKIC IOL will not be a possibility.
2. Anterior chamber depth: Your anterior chamber depth will be measured using an IOL Master machine. An adequate depth must be present between the posterior cornea and your Verisyses IOL. If the depth is too shallow a Verisyses IOL will not be an option.
Can Both Eyes be Corrected Together?
No. The eyes are done separately usually, several weeks apart.
How Long will my Procedure Take to Perform?
Placement of your Verisyses lens will take 15 to 30 minutes. Your total time at the outpatient surgery will be approximately two hours. IV sedation and local anesthetic will usually make your procedure painless.
What Happens if I Develop a Cataract?
Dr. Allen will remove the Verisyses lens and perform cataract surgery in a routine fashion. A standard post-cataract intraocular lens is placed during your cataract surgery.
What are the Advantages of the Verisyses IOL?
- A long history of safety with over 150,000 procedures performed.
- FDA trials revealed greater than 90% satisfaction rate.
- The lens can be removed if desired.
- This lens provides excellent quality of vision.
Visian IOL
This PHAKIC IOL is placed behind the iris (the colored part of the eye) but in front of your natural lens. Sutures are not required as a very small incision is created.
WHo is an IOL Candidate?
- Patients with severe nearsightedness.
- Patients with a stable eye glass prescription.
- Patients with no serious eye conditions.
Are There Any Special Concerns with Selecting the Correct Size of IOL?
Yes. If too small of an IOL is chosen, it is more likely to touch your natural lens and increase cataract risk. If the IOL is too large, the risk of glaucoma may increase. Precise sizing is important.
Can Both Eyes be Treated Together?
No. We normally space the surgeries several weeks apart.
How Long Will My Procedure Take to Perform?
The procedure itself will take approximately ten minutes. Your total time at the surgery center will be two hours. IV sedation and local anesthetic will usually make the procedure painless.
What if I Develop a Cataract?
Dr. Allen will remove your IOL and perform routine cataract surgery with a post-cataract IOL implantation.
Does Insurance Pay for PHAKIC IOL's?
No. However we offer a variety of financing programs, including zero down and zero percent interest.
