PRK
(Photo Refractive Keratectomy)
PRK was the first laser vision correction procedure approved by the FDA. LASIK involves creating a corneal flap and lasering the inner corneal bed. LASIK offers a faster visual recovery and less post-operative discomfort. This accounts for the greater popularity of LASIK. PRK however offers the same long-term visual results as LASIK. PRK like LASIK, can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
PRK should be considered when:
1. Your cornea is too thin for LASIK.
2. Your cornea is too flat or too steep for LASIK.
3. You have a history of basement membrance dystrophy.
4. You have moderate dry eye.
5. You have had irregular surface healing or flap complications with LASIK.
What will I Experience with PRK?
You will arrive at our office one hour prior to your procedure. You may not drive yourself. The visual recovery is slower with PRK. We usually perform PRK on one eye at a time, with the second eye being done approximately two weeks after the first. After receiving a sedative and topical anesthetic drops, you will be escorted to the laser suite. The non-operative eye is taped closed. A smooth eyelid holder is placed on the operative eye to keep you from blinking. Dr. Allen will then gently remove your epithelium, a thin layer of clear protective "skin" that covers the cornea. You will fixate on a red light. The laser treatment will usually last one minute or less. It has a tapping sound, and an exhaust odor, but causes no discomfort. If you look away, the laser tracker will stop the treatment until you refixate. A bandage soft contact lens will be applied for comfort. After a brief post-operative check at the slit-lamp, you will be released home to rest. Moderate discomfort is expected for the first four hours. Eye drops and pain medication can minimize discomfort.
How Quickly Will My Vision Return?
The vision will be poor until the surface epithelium heals. This usually takes about 3 - 4 days. The surface will still be slightly irregular and swollen so significant visual improvement may require 7 - 14 days.
Are there Side Effects?
The risk of severe vision loss is extremely rare. Infection, haze, and scarring occur infrequently. A re-treatment may be required to optimize your vision if over- or under-correction should occur.
