Refractive Lensectomy

Refractive Lensectomy uses modern microsurgical cataract removal techniques to remove your natural lens. The difference between refractive lensectomy and cataract surgery is that refractive lensectomy is primarily concerned with reducing dependence on glasses or contacts. Cataract surgery is concerned with removing a patient's cataract that is clouding their vision. Once the lens is removed, a standard intraocular lens can be placed to correct distance vision only. Readers will be required post-operatively.

Alternatively, if a patient desires less dependence at distance and near vision, a multifocal lens may be placed. We call this a PRELEX procedure.

Learn About PRELEX

The surgical procedure is identical except that in a non-PRELEX refractive lensectomy, patients may choose a monofocal intraocular lens.

Who is a candidate for refractive lensectomy?

  • Patients who want to reduce their dependency on glasses or contacts
  • Patients who have stable prescriptions
  • Patients whose glasses prescription is too large to have LASIK
  • Patients who have no significant health problems affecting their eyes
